With the athletics kicking off and the swimming going strong, it’s set to be the most jam-packed day of the Tokyo Olympics yet. Follow all the action here on The Roar as Day 8 of the games begins from 11:30am AEST.

A superb performance in the pool by Team Australia across the first week of the Games has already seen the gold medal tally swell to nine – more than in either the London or Rio Olympics.

The Dolphins have certainly set the bar high for the track and field team, who have already dealt with a COVID-19 scare after being briefly forced into isolation.

One of the athletes hit hardest by that is pole-vaulter Kurtis Marschall, who was deemed a close contact to USA champion Sam Kendricks, whose positive COVID-19 test kick-started the drama. Marschall has been kept separate from the rest of the team, but is still permitted to compete in his heat. Elsewhere, Peter Bol is Australia’s great white hope in the 800m event as the heats begin, while Charlie Hunter and Jeffrey Riseley will also be hoping to make it through.

The swimming will, however, still be the main focus for many, with golden girl Ariarne Titmus aiming for a third gold of the Games in the 800m freestyle. She will once again be taking on American great Katie Ledecky for the title, plus another Aussie hopeful in Kiah Melverton, who finished third behind Titmus and Russian Anastasiya Kirpichnikova in their heat.

The 200m backstroke final will also be compelling viewing, with two more Aussies in Kaylee McKeown and Emily Seebohm vying for gold. McKeown already broke the 100m Olympic record to claim gold on Tuesday – can she repeat the dose at double distance?

The Aussies will also be hoping to take home the first ever gold in the new mixed 4x100m medley relay, featuring gold medallists Zac Stubblety-Cook and Bronte Campbell, plus Isaac Cooper and Brianna Throssell.

Before that, though, Matthew Temple will be bidding to take Australian into double digits on the gold medal tally in the men’s 100m butterfly. He’ll be up against it, though, with Hungary’s Kristof Milak setting an Olympic record in the heats.

Finishing off the day will be Matthew Denny in the men’s discus final, who is deemed a great chance to become the first Australian ever to win a medal in the event; while the Boomers will also be keen for a third win from three in their basketball group stage when they take on Germany.

Here at The Roar, we’ll be keeping an eye on all the action in our rolling blog, so be sure to check in here to make sure you don’t miss the big moments on an action-packed Day 8 of the Olympic Games.
