Off the back of a history-equalling haul of medals in the pool, the Aussies have come away empty thus far in the track and field events at the Olympics.

Failing to medal in any athletics event outside of race walking in Rio, Australia have a few chances to rectify that today in the women’s long jump and men’s pole vault finals.

Brooke Stratton is an outside chance in the long jump final after squeezing into the twelfth and last spot. However, she has plenty more in store than what was shown in the qualifiers.

Kurtis Marschall is up against it in the pole vault, pitted against five competitors who have posted personal bests of 6m or greater before, while Marschall struggled at 5.65 in the qualifying round. Hopefully, he’s holding out for a Steve Hooker-like performance.

For those on gold medal watch, there are also finals in the men’s 400m hurdles, women’s hammer throw, women’s 800m, and women’s 200m – none of which will feature an Australian.

Elsewhere, there’s a surplus of massive events tonight for the Aussies as we get towards the pointy end of things in Tokyo.

Starting off with some quarter-final action, the Aussie women are competing in the beach volleyball before Harry Garside takes on Kazakhstan’s Zakir Safiullin in the lightweight boxing.

Later tonight, the Kookaburras clash with the bronze-medallists from Rio, Germany, in the hockey semi-finals to be shortly followed by the Aussie women’s water polo semis.

The Boomers cap off a packed day with a quarterfinal against Argentina in their single-minded pursuit of a first basketball medal for Australia.
