Australia will look to sew up a spot in the Rugby League World Cup quarter-finals this morning when they take on Scotland at Coventry Building Society Arena. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5:30am (AEDT).

With the Kangaroos all but assured of a spot in the quarter-finals after the win against Fiji, the next couple of games are all going to be about building combinations and refining their game. Despite Scotland and Italy being well off Australia’s pace, the Kangaroos are unlikely to deviate from their game plan. It will be all about creating ruck speed to benefit their talented backline.

Australia didn’t have their own way early against Fiji, with the Pacific Island nation the first to score points. However a number of Fijian handling errors swung momentum and Australia took control from there, cruising to a 42-8 win.

The Australian left side in attack looked particularly dangerous, with Harry Grant, Cameron Munster and Angus Crichton the standouts for the Kangaroos.

The NRL Grand Final players in the squad will all get a run this game, so Reagan Campbell-Gillard, Nathan Cleary, Liam Martin and Isaah Yeo are all expected to play.

After a loss to Italy first up, Scotland are playing for their World Cup future this morning. They did cross early against the Azzurri, but the try was denied after a knock on in the put down.

Italy steadied from there and, led by Nathan Brown, ran away to score a convincing 28-4 win.

The majority of the Scotland side ply their trade in the UK, with Euan Aitken the sole NRL player. Aitken has called on his side to “rip in as much as we can and wear a bit of pride on our sleeves” against the Kangaroos.

Prediction

This one could get a bit ugly.

Expect Scotland to be competitive early but, once Australia gain control, plenty of tries will result.

Australia to win by 60.
