Round 19 of the NRL Premiership continues this afternoon when the Canberra Raiders host the New Zealand Warriors at GIO Stadium in Canberra. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 3.00pm AEST.

With one of the easier runs into the finals, the Raiders have a real chance of qualifying for the semi-finals this year. However, sitting one game outside the 8, they can’t afford any slip-ups against teams they are favoured to beat.

The Raiders would have gained plenty of confidence with their 20-16 win against the Storm last Sunday afternoon. Canberra have had a strong pack in recent years but their creativity has been lacking.

Jack Wighton and Jamal Fogarty have made the most of their limited time together, with talented youngsters in the backline, like Sebastian Kris and James Schiller, benefiting.

Nick Cotric comes in at fullback for the suspended Jordan Rapana. Albert Hopoate will play on the wing, replacing the injured Schiller. Elliott Whitehead returns, with Corey Harawira-Naera moving back to the bench.

On paper, the Warriors last start loss to the Eels 28-18 doesn’t look that bad, but the reality is that a couple of late tries masked what was a convincing Eels win.

The Warriors pack looks like it can just about match the Raiders. To cause an upset though, Shaun Johnson needs to have a big game. His record against the Raiders is excellent, and he will need to build on that history this afternoon.

The Warriors have identified a need for something different and have made some changes this round. Chanel Harris-Tavita will start at fullback, with Reece Walsh bumped to the bench. Daejarn Asi gets a start in the 6 jersey. Dallin Watene-Zelezniak also returns from COVID protocols.

Prediction

The Raiders are building some momentum late in the season and have it all to play for right now.

On the other hand, despite an encouraging welcome home, the Warriors don’t have the same momentum.

The home side should win comfortably.
