Round 8 of the NRL Premiership continues tonight when the Gold Coast Titans take on the Penrith Panthers at Cbus Super Stadium in Robina. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 6.00pm AEST.
A little over nine months ago, the Titans made their way into the 2021 finals and were desperately unlucky to lose to the Roosters in the first week. Hopes were high that the Titans would continue their climb up the ladder in 2022. Instead, they have hit a flat spot and face the toughest test tonight.
The warning signs were already there but the 30-4 drubbing by the Cowboys showed that the Titans are in serious trouble.
The loss of Jamal Fogarty and Ash Taylor has impacted the Titans more than most thought and AJ Brimson has struggled in the 6 jersey. Justin Holbrook is also struggling to get the best out of David Fifita. It’s not crisis time yet, but a few more losses will have the Gold Coast falling out of top 8 contention.
It’s no surprise that there are plenty of changes. Brimson goes back to fullback, with Jamayne Isaako out of the 17. Will Smith will start at 6, Phillip Sami returns from injury on the wing and Patrick Herbert moves inside by one into the centres. David Fifita returns to the pack.
To accommodate Fifita, Kevin Proctor returns to the bench. Moeaki Fotuaika is named to start at prop, with Tanah Boyd and Herman Ese’ese joining the bench.
Jayden Campbell has been named in the squad and is a chance of returning.
The Penrith juggernaut just keeps on rolling. The 36-6 demolition of the Raiders was just about as clinical as it gets.
The Panthers game plan is simple but obviously effective. They use an impressive forward pack and Nathan Cleary’s kicking game to control field position and slowly squeeze the life out of the opposition. They have then got a number of attacking options that can put on points in a hurry.
Once again, Penrith have the luxury of an unchanged line up.
Prediction
This Titans team take on an improved look to me, and the possible inclusion of Campbell would make it better still.
However, they are taking on the reigning premiers who don’t look like dropping a game anytime soon.
The Panthers should win comfortably.
