The Manly Sea Eagles host the North Queensland in an intriguing encounter at 4 Pines Park when they clash tonight. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 6pm AEST.

The Sea Eagles are kicking on without Tommy Turbo, knocking over the Warriors and Tigers in recent weeks to reignite their finals flame. They now face a true test back at home, against a Cowboys side that has lost just one of their last nine games – away from home to the Panthers. The Cowboys made light work against the Dragons in Townsville last Friday night and if the Sea Eagles hope to beat them they will have to be at their very best.

The Cowboys lose Heilum Luki and Tom Gilbert for this one. Luki is replaced by Connelly Lemuelu off the bench from last week, Jeremiah Nanai returns from injury to replace Tom Gilbert. Reuben Cotter is set to return after a barnstorming Origin performance, pushing Coen Hess back to the bench. In the only change for the Sea Eagles, Daly Cherry-Evans returns at halfback, Josh Schuster reverts to the bench and Ben Trbojevic is out of the side.

The Sea Eagles have won 18 of 31 matches between these two in the NRL era. The Sea Eagles won both match-ups between the two last season, and haven’t been beaten by the Cowboys since 2018. They’ve won 5 of the last 6 between the two side. The Cowboys actually have a pretty good record at Brookvale, 6 wins from 11 attempts.

Prediction

While Tom Trbojevic is a massive loss for the Sea Eagles, Manly have plenty of time to figure out how they are going to play without him. Their last two weeks have been much improved, and they still have plenty of capable footballers in their side.

Back at home, on a Friday night, this is very much a game they can win. But anything less than their best won’t get the job done. Little has been made of it but the Cowboys season has been built on defence as much as anything else. They have conceded the second most points overall, behind the Panthers at a rate of just over 12 points per game.

If the Sea Eagles are going to win this, they are going to have to be prepared to get in the grind and win it at the death, something they have rarely been able to do to this season. As ever, the burden falls onto the shoulders of Daly Cherry-Evans and Keiran Foran to steer the side around to victory. For the Cowboys, if they can limit the Sea Eagles to 12, they absolutely win. They have so much strike power in their back line, and some forwards in career best form.

You can’t tip against the 3rd placed Cowboys on form at the moment, but I think the Sea Eagles will find a peak performance in this one and make them work for their win.
