Round 16 of the NRL premiership continues this afternoon when the Newcastle Knights take on the Sydney Roosters at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 3:00pm (AEST).

We’ve got a high stakes clash this afternoon between two teams trying to cling to the edge of the top 8. A loss here doesn’t mean the season is over, but it does mean the job to jump a logjam of teams becomes that little bit harder.

Pre game against the Broncos, Adam O’Brien intimated his team had had a perfect preparation for the Brisbane fixture. It showed on the field, with the Broncos only securing the 4 point win with less than 5 minutes remaining.

The challenge for the Knights is backing up that effort this week. If their big pack can generate some good go forward, the Knights do have some points in them. Kalyn Ponga is getting back to some of his best form and will be a handful.

In team changes, Lachlan Fitzgibbon returns from injury in a straight swap for Tyson Frizell, who is away on Origin duty. Enari Tuala comes in on the wing for Greg Marzhew, who breached team protocols and sits this one out.

The Roosters form issues continued last round with a 30-6 drubbing by the Panthers. Penrith put their cue in the rack after just over 50 minutes but never looked remotely troubled.

Sydney’s attack remains the worst in the competition. They have the firepower but something is missing. Against Penrith, the Roosters forward pack was dominated. The Roosters spent most of the game working it off their line.

The Roosters are missing James Tedesco and Lindsay Collins through Origin duty. Joey Manu moves to fullback and Sandon Smith gets a spot in the halves. Naufahu Whyte comes into the pack in the absence of Collins. Billy Smith is back and forces Drew Hutchison to the bench. Matt Lodge has been dropped and is replaced by Terrell May.

Prediction

The Knights deservedly start favourite on their home track. Through Origin duty and injury, the Roosters are missing some key forwards.

Newcastle should gain at least parity in the middle and Ponga will provide enough in attack. Knights by 6
