The South Sydney Rabbitohs will be looking for a rare win over the Melbourne Storm when they host them on Saturday night. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7.35pm AEST.

The Rabbitohs have bounced back into form with the return of Latrell Mitchell, three wins in a row since he made his comeback. While the wins have been the most important things, the Rabbitohs still have plenty of work to do ahead of the finals. Mitchell has made a world of difference to the attack of South Sydney.

His involvements have been eye-catching, particularly last week against the Bulldogs. In saying that the Rabbitohs have leaked 28 points the last two weeks, and are conceding on average 22 points per game so far in 2022. While the Storm have struggled recently, that sort of defence is concerning with the finals fast approaching.

The Storm are in unfamiliar territory. Their third straight loss against the Raiders last week was the first time they have lost that many games on the trot since 2015. That is an astonishing record in itself, but it also demonstrates how “un-melbourne” like the Storm are travelling right now. While they have had a wealth of injuries to deal with, they have opportunities to win the game at the death last week and still had a few quality players on the park to do it. You get the feeling they are due for a fairly stoic performance after a tough few weeks.

The Rabbitohs welcome the return of Cameron Murray and Damien Cook for this one after they were rested from their clash against the Bulldogs last week. Jed Cartwright replaces Taane Milne in the centres. The season ending injury to Ryan Papenhuyzen sees Nick Meaney return to the custodian role. Tyran Wishart is in on the wing for Meaney while Grant Anderson joins the bench.

Melbourne are far and away the Rabbitohs bogey team. In 36 attempts, the Rabbitohs have beaten the Storm just 5 times. They are currently on a seven game losing streak, their last win against the Storm coming back in 2018. The Storm also enjoy a 68% win record at Accor Stadium. The Rabbitohs came painfully close to their first win in Melbourne earlier this year, but a Ryan Papenhuyzen field goal got the Storm home.

Prediction

This is a hard one to tip. You can never write off the Storm and while they have done it tough of late, they still have a team that contains Cameron Munster, Jahrome Hughes and Harry Grant. While the Rabbitohs have no doubt improved with the return of Mitchell, their defence remains a worry.

I have to tip Souths at home, and playing with a bit of momentum. They also really need to keep notching wins with a chasing pack of top 8 hopefuls right behind them. A loss could see them finish the round in 8th, and with a couple more teams pushing them for a top 8 berth.
