Round 17 continues tonight when the South Sydney Rabbitohs host the North Queensland Cowboys at Stadium Australia. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:55pm (AEST).
The second part of the split round is upon us and teams will have to make do without their State of Origin players. The depth of both teams will be tested, although the Rabbits have five players on Origin duty compared to the Cowboys’ three.
With most of the media scrutiny on the Storm and Panthers, the Rabbits are quietly going about their business, sitting just one win, and admittedly a large points differential, from the top of the ladder.
Make no mistake, the 38-22 win over the Tigers last start was over at half-time, with Souths leading 26-0 at the break. They may have switched off, or the Origin players may have gone into some self preservation.
Whatever it was, the Rabbits had done it easy.
As you’d expect, plenty of changes for South Sydney. Blake Taaffe has been named at fullback in place of Latrell Mitchell, with Braiden Burns coming in for Dane Gagai.
Hame Sele moves to lock to cover for Cameron Murray and Tom Burgess will get a start at prop. Jaydn Su’A comes in for Jai Arrow whilst Benji Marshall will play at dummy half.
Patrick Mago and Peter Mamouzelos come onto the bench.
North Queensland went to McDonald Jones Stadium last Saturday night with a chance to climb into the eight. Instead, they left it with their season in trouble after a comprehensive hammering from the Knights.
Whilst the defence was concerning enough, even more worry surrounds the Cowboys attack. They struggled to build pressure while Jake Clifford was showing everyone why the Cowboys shouldn’t have let him go.
Daejarn Asi comes in for Valentine Holmes, whilst Connolly Lemuelu returns from injury to replace Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow.
Coen Hess is named to start at prop but he may swap with Lachlan Burr, as was the case last week. Tom Gilbert gets a spot on the bench with Francis Molo on Origin duty.
Prediction
Whilst Souths are missing some stars, the halves are unchanged, with Adam Reynolds and Cody Walker perhaps unlucky not to be playing Origin.
This does play into the Rabbits’ hands though and, together with the craftiness of Benji Marshall at hooker, they should be able to create enough points to win.
