After their heroics at the Adelaide Oval, the Wallabies are looking to continue their recent stranglehold over the Springboks and start life at Allianz Stadium on the perfect note. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:35pm AEST.
The Wallabies’ 25-17 win over the Springboks in Adelaide was arguably their finest under Dave Rennie. An uncharacteristically fast start, some defensive steel and an all-time game from winger Marika Koroibete all were pivotal to the upset result, and left Australia equal top of the Rugby Championship points table.
As a result, Rennie has named a nearly unchanged line-up for the second Test, with Jake Gordon replacing Tate McDermott on the bench the only alteration.
The Boks, meanwhile, have rung the changes after their lack of imagination in attack and string of injuries and suspensions made going back to the well untenable for coach Jacques Nienaber.
Handre Pollard, Lukhanyo Am and Pieter-Steph du Toit have been ruled out through injury, while regulars Duane Vermeulen and Faf de Klerk have been dropped, the former to the bench and the latter from the 23 entirely. All up, the Springboks have made a whopping eight changes to the side that lost at the Adelaide Oval.
19-year old Canan Moodie has been named for his debut, while Nienaber has gambled on moving Damian Willemse from fullback to fly-half, partly due to injury woes, partly because his dynamic playmaking could be just the tonic to fix the Boks’ attacking struggles.
South Africa are marooned in dead last on the Rugby Championship table, but are still in with a shot of turning things around with a pair of games against a vastly improved Argentina to come. However, to head into those games with any confidence, a first win against the Wallabies on Australian soil since 2013 is a must.
