The Brisbane Roar and Wellington Phoenix do battle at Suncorp Stadium in Round 2 A-League action. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5pm (AEDT).
After two of the more impressive displays of the first week, both Brisbane and Wellington will be seeking a continuation of their positive starts to the season.
With plenty of chances and some unlucky VAR intervention, the Roar could only manage a point against the Mariners when they really should have locked up all three quite comfortably.
The Phoenix also had a little luck in its win over Newcastle in Round 1 yet did defend gallantly for much of the contest and managed to find the net on two occasions.
Brisbane look to have a dangerous and multi-pronged attacking force with Adam Taggart appearing lethal on the end of quality balls from Eric Bautheac and Tobias Mikkelsen. Defensively they also looked solid and John Aloisi might finally have the balanced squad for which he has sought and one that could make a serious run at the title.
Wellington needed immediate improvement under Mark Rudan and it looks as thought they have already taken a few steps forward. Steven Taylor looks a fantastic acquisition to sturdy up what was a leaky defence last season and with Roy Krishna combining well with David Williams and Mandi and Sarpreet Singh providing the service, their attack looks as potent as it has for some time.
With Melbourne City picking up just the one point this weekend, Wellington have the chance to take the outright ladder lead after two weeks, in what would be a great early season boost for the club. Brisbane can also move equal top with a win of their own and create what would be a logjam at the head of the ladder.
Prediction
It’s hard to go past Brisbane after their excellent attacking display last week. The Phoenix were solid in defence yet the Roar should be able to break them down. Brisbane in a tight one with a few goals.
