The Matildas open their 2019 World Cup campaign against Italy in Valenciennes. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 9pm (AEST).

After drama, turmoil and now expectation, the Matildas can finally concentrate on what they do best.

For the first time in history an Australian football team enters a major tournament with seriously high expectations and hopes, with Ante Milicic’s team expecting to navigate the group and move into the knockout stage.

Beyond that of course, fortune plays a role yet the talent in the Australian squad is capable of knocking off the best of the best but must focus on the immediate task at hand in order to provide those opportunities later in the tournament.

As the sixth-ranked nation in women’s football, Australia enter this match as a more polished unit than the 15th ranked Italians yet there is danger ahead if the Matildas give anything less than 100 per cent respect to the traditional footballing nation.

World Cups mean a lot to Italy and the passion of the fans who have made the short trip to France will be an added bonus for them.

Australia will also have a solid travelling supporting group in attendance and their voices will no doubt provide the team with an emotional moment as they line up and sing the anthem prior to what will be biggest moment in their careers.

The Matildas will be looking to Sam Kerr and Caitlin Foord to provide the firepower up front and Alanna Kennedy and Ellie Carpenter to keep things tight at the back.

Opening up passing lanes and attacking avenues through the centre of the field is vital and an area where the Matildas can sometimes become a little stagnate.

Carpenter, Hayley Raso and Elise Kellond-Knight will be key in opening up those channels, creating width and providing quality ball to Kerr and Foord.

Prediction
It feels like the Australians have come so far and arrived in France with a sense of purpose. Expect a dynamic start and an emotional goal to Lisa De Vanna off the bench in the second half.

The Italians have some quality and will threaten, however, the Matildas will be a little too consistent and powerful across the park.
