Show Preview

Melbourne Victory makes its first appearance at home this season as they host the Newcastle Jets in Round 2 A-League action. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5pm (AEDT).

After a stunning start to the new season in the Big Blue against the struggling Sydney FC on the opening weekend, Victory will look to remain unbeaten and take top spot on the A-League ladder with a win today.

Things look a whole better for the men in dark blue after another season of disappointment in 2022/23, with coach Tony Popovic finally looking to have the group he needs to contend and return the traditionally successful club to the finals.

Striker Bruno Fornaroli looks to be in good touch early in the season, import Zinedine Machach starred against Sydney and the balance across the eleven that took to the pitch last weekend looked impressive. More will be expected of Daniel Arzani as the week’s progress, yet the basis of a decent season could well be laid with a second consecutive win this afternoon.

Newcastle stunned the Glory with a late equaliser in Perth last time out and earned a valuable point. Many saw the Jets as potential battlers this season, yet the combination of Apostolos Stamatelopoulos and Trent Buhagiar up front has potential and the experience of Jason Hoffman will be important in guiding the young group through what will be a long and difficult campaign. The inclusion of Brandon O’Neill for this clash is a significant boost for the visitors.

Prediction

Based on what we saw in the opening round, this is a match the Victory should win. Newcastle will surprise a few across the journey, but not today.

There appears to be a touch of class about Machach and with a back four that will difficult to break down this season, the Jets will be similar to many teams in struggling to find the goals to outscore the potent Victory front line.
