Perth Glory welcome Adelaide United to HBF Park on Friday evening in the semi-finals of the 2018-19 A-League season. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 8:30pm (AEST).
Friday night finals football under the lights needs no extra hype, but I’ll do it anyway.
This will be the first finals clash between Perth Glory and Adelaide United in A-League history.
Perth Glory are overwhelming favourites to book their place in next weekends Grand Final, but the Reds have been full of surprises this season – typified by their dramatic extra-time victory over Melbourne City last Sunday.
As underdogs, Adelaide captain, Isaias Sanchez, insists his side “feel no pressure” in what could be coach Marco Kurz’s final game in charge of the Reds.
Kurz will finish his two-year stint with Adelaide after the finals, despite leading them to the playoffs for two consecutive seasons and an FFA Cup win.
Fatigue will be a major factor concerning Kurz going up against one of the fittest teams in the competition. Perth literally ran away with the Premiers plate this year.
However, a key cog in the Glory machine may miss out. Midfield general, Neil Kilkenny, is nursing an ankle injury picked up in training. The members’ player of the season would be a massive loss for Tony Popovic’s side.
Glory chalked up two wins against United this season and a goalless draw here back in January.
What Reds fans would give for another clean sheet tonight.
Extra time and penalties may of course, be required.
These tense, agonising, do-or-die nights are the very reason we love football. If we get half as much drama as the UEFA Champions League semi-finals produced, then we are in for quite a ride at HBF Park.
Prediction
Having had a week longer to rest and prepare, plus home advantage, it’s hard to see past the purple premiers. I hope it is a lot closer than this though.
