Wellington Phoenix and Brisbane Roar meet in Round 9 A-League action. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5:35pm (AEDT).
The Phoenix will be looking for their third win on the trot and hoping to complete a month without defeat, after wins against Sydney and Central Coast and an unlucky draw again Perth Glory.
While the home side has enjoyed a nice run of football and the subsequently pleasing results, it is been a very different story for the Roar; without a win since the 2-1 victory over City in November.
Three consecutive losses have them just one rung from the bottom of the ladder after what appeared to be a promising and hopeful start to the season.
Adam Taggart, despite blazing wide on occasion, converted early chances and the club looked to have found the focal point it required up front.
With Alex Lopez and Eric Bautheac providing the service and Tobias Mikkelsen starting the season well, Roar fans were energised.
Sadly, it has fallen in something of a screaming heap and Bautheac’s Round 8 red card and one-match suspension, reflected the grumblings in the squad.
There will be a tipping point in the near future, results such as the past month are not sustainable and John Aloisi must surely be having trouble sleeping; knowing that his head is well and truly on the proverbial chopping block.
No such issue for Mark Rudan, who has become a favourite in Wellington after just a couple of months in the gig.
Roy Krishna has been in sparkling form and Sarpreet Singh is stepping up from a promising young player to a fully fledged A-League star.
A sturdy defence has been at the core of the Wellington success and Rudan will be looking for more of the same against a team that struggles to score. It could make for a long afternoon for the Roar.
Prediction
Wellington should grab their third consecutive win and move deeper into the six. Without Bautheac and an out of form midfield, it is hard to see the Roar bursting through Steven Taylor and co at the back.
