The blockbuster AFL trade of Brendan Fevola to Brisbane has finally gone through. Less than three hours before the 2pm Friday trade deadline, Carlton and the Lions announced a deal for the star full-forward.

Carlton have also given up their second-round draft selection at No.27 in return for Brisbane utility Lachlan Henderson and the Lions’ first-round draft pick at No.12.

On Thursday, the Blues and Lions were trying to engineer a deal that would have sent Brisbane key forward Daniel Bradshaw and team-mate Michael Rischitelli to Carlton.

But the deal fell over and there is speculation the main reason is that Rischitelli did not want to leave the Lions.

Carlton decided to trade Fevola after his drunken misbehaviour during and after last month’s Brownlow Medal function.

It was the last straw for the Blues and they resolved to move him on despite protests from some fans.

Fevola’s move means he will form a fearsome key forward combination with Lions captain Jonathan Brown.

Fevola is the reigning Coleman Medallist as the league’s top goalkicker and he also won the award in 2006, while Brown topped the goalkicking in 2007.

Fevola is a three-time All-Australian and was named this year along with Brown, who received the honour for the second time.

There is ongoing speculation that Bradshaw might still move to another club before trade week ends.

Fevola’s trade was the only new exchange announced before noon on Friday, but there are certain to be others before the 2pm deadline.
