Willie Mason has urged his Newcastle teammates to use the memories of last season’s memorable NRL semi-final win over Melbourne as inspiration to get their stuttering season on track.

The Knights have lost to Penrith and Canberra in their opening two games of the season and head to the Victorian capital to take on the unbeaten Storm next Monday.

On their last visit to AAMI Park Wayne Bennett’s side ended a run of 10 straight losses away to Craig Bellamy’s side with shock 18-16 win that took them to within one step of the grand final.

Despite that positive finish to the second half of the 2013 campaign, the Knights have struggled in their opening two games.

However, Mason believes the team aren’t too far away from first victory and still have the self-belief to beat the Storm.

“It’s one of the hardest things to do in rugby league so we are pretty pumped for it,” Mason said.

“That Storm semi-final was massive and people who played in that game remember how hard it was.

“I’m pretty sure Melbourne remember how hard it was and they will want to get their own back on us.

“But we need to kick-start our season down there and it doesn’t matter if it’s Melbourne, Brisbane or Manly, we need to win.”
