The beginning of Ligue 1's PSG era?

Despite slipping up against Valenciennes to draw 1-all last week, it is a question of when rather than if Paris Saint-Germain will secure their first Ligue 1 title under Qatari ownership.

With three games to play, a seven point lead over second-placed Marseille and goal differential 34 strikes better than their nearest challengers, all outcomes appear in PSG’s favour.

While this week’s trip to Lyon could prove difficult, PSG would almost certainly win all three points at home to rock-bottom Brest in the penultimate round of the season.

Remarkably, this would mark the fifth season in a row that Ligue 1 has had a new champion (preceded by Montpellier, Lille, Marseille and Bordeaux) since Lyon won a staggering seven consecutive league titles.

The question is, will this be the beginning of PSG’s dominance or simply a continuation of the ‘post-Lyon’ era?

Most signs point to the former, with the mega-bucks laid out to purchase Zlatan Ibrahimović et al, PSG has a significant financial advantage over all of its competitors when it comes to not only strengthening its squad, but retaining its best players.

While previous Ligue 1 winners have been dismantled by cashed-up clubs from other European leagues, PSG certainly has no trouble in rewarding key players new contracts to stop them jumping ship.

One signing that will be crucial this off-season though is the new manager, if the rumours linking Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid are to be believed.

Ancelotti has hand-picked most of the current starting XI of the club and has a proven record in the Champions League.

If he were to take over from Jose Mourinho at the Bernabeu, PSG must leave no stone unturned when searching for an appropriate successor.

While their playing stocks are impressive, without a strong enough manager to balance the egos of the squad (namely Mr Ibrahimovic), the club could collapse from the inside out.

I wonder if a certain Laurent Blanc is ready to return to management…
