The US Open will be decided with fan favourite Juan Martin Del Potro taking on Novak Djokovic who is out to win his second straight. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 6am (AEST).

As powerful as Del Potro is with his big serve and forehand, along with the form he had been showing, he was supposed to run into a buzzsaw during the semi-finals.

Instead, he found a struggling and ultimately, injured Rafael Nadal.

After taking the first set in a tiebreaker, which he has an edge in against most players on the ATP tour, Del Potro ran through the second set before Nadal threw the towel in, unable to deal with a knee complaint.

Del Potro’s serve and forehand combination has been rolling throughout the tournament, and as a result, the Argentine has lost just a single set across his six matches – coming in the quarter-final against John Isner.

On the other hand, Djokovic looked scratchy early at the final grand slam of the year, but has been superb since, not dropping a set since the second round.

His level of play has been astronomical, with the former world No.1 aiming for his second grand slam in a row. He has been defending well, returning serve excellently, painting lines and after wins over John Millman and Kei Nishikori, he is primed to go the journey in New York.

The pressure will be on Djokovic nonetheless, given he comes into the final as favourite.

Djokovic has a brilliant record over Del Potro as well, having won 14 of their 18 career matches including all of the last three during 2017. They are yet to face off in 2018.

Prediction
Logic probably says Djokovic should win. He has been solid, hitting the ball well and is the best returner on tour. Del Potro is a fighter though and his serve might ruffle the feathers of the Serbian if he can get sets to tie breakers.

Del Potro in five sets.
