Youngster Alex Edmondson has claimed his second gold medal at this year’s world track cycling championships with victory in the men’s individual pursuit.

The 20-year-old narrowly edged out Swiss rider Stefan Kueng in the final in Cali, Colombia, on Friday afternoon (AEDT), beating him by a mere 0.41seconds.

The South Australian had qualified fastest for the event.

The win is Edmondson’s second in 24 hours, having taken gold in the team pursuit on Thursday.

It is also Australia’s fourth consecutive title in the event, after Queensland’s Michael Hepburn claimed back-to-back crowns in 2013 and 2012, and Jack Bobridge took the honours in 2011.

Earlier, compatriot Anna Meares narrowly missed out on a record 11th world title, winning silver in the 500m time trial.

The 30-year-old’s time of 33.548secs was not enough to win her pet event, with Germany’s Miriam Welte taking out gold in a blistering 33.451secs.

Anastasia Voinova of Russia came in third for the bronze medal.

The South Australian still has two more chances to become the most successful female track cyclist in history this weekend in the sprint and keirin events.

She currently shares the lead on 10 rainbow jerseys with France’s Felicia Ballanger, who who claimed five sprint and five time trial world titles between 1995 and 1999.

Meanwhile Glenn O’Shea finished eighth in the men’s 15km scratch race, behind winner Ivan Kovalev of Russia.
