Australia’s only Tour de France champion, Cadel Evans, has confirmed he’ll quit the sport in early 2015.

Evans, who won the Tour in 2011, was speaking in north-western Spain ahead of the world championship road race on Sunday when he’ll be one of Australia’s three protected riders.

The 37-year-old won the world title back in 2009 – another first for an Australian.

He told reporters on Thursday that his last race ever would be his own inaugural Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race in Victoria in early February.

Evans also plans to race the Australian national championships and ProTour’s opening race of the year, the Tour Down Under in January.

“The chance of winning another grand tour is probably past me,” he admitted when explaining his decision to retire.

“I’ll watch from the sidelines.”
