Facebook have been combing through their analytics, judiciously counting each and every mention of each horse running in the 2014 Melbourne Cup in the hope of uncovering who they should punt on for the race that stops a nation.

Whether or not they’ve succeeded will be witnessed tomorrow, but they’ve managed to accumulate over two million mentions of the race already.

From that, they’ve distilled down the number of mentions each horse has had, and determined a finishing order based on the popularity of each one.

We’ll break the order down to you below, and why we think Facebook has predicted them.

Facebook’s predicted Melbourne Cup finishing order
1. Admire Rakti
2. Signoff
3. Lucia Valentina
4. Fawkner
5. Protectionist
6. Who Shot Thebarman
7. Red Cadeaux
8. Mutual Regard
9. Brambles
10. Araldo
11. Junoob
12. Unchain My Heart
13. Sea Moon – scratched – read the story here
14. Royal Diamond
15. Cavalryman
16. Opinion
17. Willing Foe
18. Seismos
19. Lidari
20. Precedence
21. My Ambivalent
22. Au Revoir
23. Gatewood
24. Mr. O’Ceirin

Admire Rakti’s obvious – people want to know who the favourite is, and so he gets mentions accordingly. Similarly, Signoff made it up the rankings due to his win in the Lexus Stakes on the weekend, allowing him to sneak into the final 24.

Lucia Valentina ran third after Admire Rakti at the Caulfield Cup, so it’s understandable she’s in at number three, and with Fawkner the biggest local hope, explaining his presence at four is pretty easy.

Araldo and Brambles might seem a little high for their ratings, and Cavalryman a little low at number 15, but I think beyond the top six or so we probably need to take the Facebook mentions with a pinch of salt.

What we don’t need to take with a pinch of salt is Mr O’Ceirin at 24, as he’s been written off by almost everyone who’s had their say about the biggest race of the year.

This snap also made its way onto twitter, showing some smaller people pretending to be jockeys at the parade.

Enjoy!
