Magic Millions 3YO Guineas preview

A mouth-watering race awaits us as we get our first true taste of quality racing in 2015, with the Magic Millions three-year-olds battling it out over 1400 metres for $1 million in prize money.

The track will be the big talking point throughout the day, but in just a day it’s already improved from a ‘Heavy 8’ to a ‘Soft 6’, so hopefully without any further rain we should get a fairly-run race.

As it currently stands the consensus is that the race is Hijack Hussy’s to lose. She has been impressive at both Flemington and Doomben, but a few poor starts saw her give away too much ground and outsider Mywayorthehighway picked up the Group 3 Vo Rogue because of it.

One thing that is important to remember about that previous run is that Hijack Hussy came from an almost impossible position to nearly steal it on a deteriorating track. Tim Bell is an experienced jockey and if he can get her to midfield or better halfway through the race it will be curtains for her opponents.

Mywayorthehighway looks massive overs at the moment in the market and with an in-form jockey on board she could cause some headaches for her opposition.

Testashadow is another that comes into this race off the back of good form, including a strong win at Rosehill. It looked like Tree of Jessy was going to run over the top of the Gary Portelli runner, but it showed some real grit to get the win in a quality contest.

Bold Circle is another that could blow these away, Hugh Bowman is a man in demand and he gets the ride in this one. He won with plenty in reserve on New Year’s Day and Bowman worked it well from a difficult wide gate draw, he looks to be back on track so I’m keen to include him in my multiples.

Liberty Island had a second behind Gold Seventy Seven, it was by 4.8 lengths but he got the run of the race coming from last to get onto the podium. He faces the steep climb in class and barrier though.

Aerobar and Echo Gal enjoyed nice on-speed runs at Wyong when running the quinella over 1200m, with the former finishing well. Bjorn Baker’s Cyclone finished strongly and wants 1400m again now.

It’s a tough race but I like Hijack Hussy to get the chocolates.
