Group One winner The Offer will be the headline act at Hawkesbury when he kicks off his latest campaign in the Listed Rowley Mile.

This time last year the 2014 Sydney Cup winner was at the top of Melbourne Cup markets but he had a disappointing spring and didn’t line up in Australia’s most famous race.

Thursday’s Rowley Mile will be his first start since he finished unplaced in a hit-and-run raid on the Brisbane winter carnival in June.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse is optimistic The Offer can return to form this spring and has named the Group One Metropolitan Handicap at Randwick as his short-term goal.

“I’d love to send him to something like the Metropolitan, or if he really comes up I’ll take him south,” Waterhouse said.

The Rowley Mile has attracted eight runners including Winter Stakes winner Rugged Cross for Chris Waller.

Local trainers have thrown their support behind the provincial feature with Hawkesbury-trained runners making up half the field.

They include last-start winner Campania for Garry Frazer and the Wade Slinkard-trained Footy Fan.
