Weights have been released for the 138th running of the Caulfield Cup, with last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist and English horse Snow Sky (exempt from ballot) heading the field at 58kg.

Nine of the top 10 weights are either imported horses (five) or recent imports to the country (four), and 13 of the top 20 are entires – not so much a prerequisite to winning this race, but a bonus in regard to Melbourne Cup results of recent years.

The very well performed Japanese five-year-old Fame Game (five wins from 16) surprisingly only has to carry 57kg, not too bad given his arguably lesser performed counterpart Admire Rakti carried 58kg to win the race last year, off a career-record six wins from 27 starts.

Hokko Brave is also a realistic hope with 55.5kg despite being an eight-year-old.

Criterion, with 57.5kg, is the only born and bred Aussie in the top 10, but New Zealander and Australian Derby winner Mongolian comes in at 11th, with 55kg.

Three-time Melbourne Cup runner-up Red Cadeaux has also been allocated 55kg.

France could be represented by five-year-old gelding Gailo Chop (55.5kg), though the Cox Plate seems more his distance, and six-year-old gelding Mille Et Mille (52kg) who has good two-mile form, but isn’t nominated for the Melbourne Cup.

Chris Waller’s up and-coming four-year-old entire Kermadec has been allotted 54.5kg, as has the Qatari trained six-year-old entire Dubday, who broke his maiden status last start by winning the Group 3 Glorious Stakes over this distance at Goodwood last start. He is exempt from a ballot so is assured of a start.

Donna Logan’s classy four-year-old gelding Volkstok’n’barrell gets in nicely with 53.5kg, while her former mare Rising Romance has been allotted 53kg, the same weight she carried when a very creditable runner-up in last year’s race.

Tasmanian Banca Mo is another exempt from the ballot off his Mornington Cup win last winter. He would need to find that form and some though despite a feather weight of 50.5kg.

John Sargent’s 2013 VRC Oaks winner Kirramosa seems a likely winning hope off a promising first-up run in Sydney recently, especially with 50.5kg, while Chris Waller’s impressive recent BTC Oaks winner Winks might be a doubtful runner, but the stable could be tempted with her allocation of 50kg.

Way down at No.137 on the list is John O’Shea’s recent imported acquisition Havana Cooler, who ran a barnstorming race on debut in Sydney a few weeks ago. Even further down the list is French five-year-old entire Orbec, who beat Havana Cooler home last start, and probably has better 2400m credentials.

Both run in the Wyong Cup today and will need to start winning that type of race on the path to gaining a start in this potentially excellent field.
