A three-team deal has seen Jake Carlisle finally make his move to St Kilda after days of frustrated negotiations, while Sydney’s Craig Bird has joined Essendon.

The eventual deal has turned out to be somewhat different from the one floated yesterday, and Essendon look to be the big winners out of it at first glance.

Here’s the ins and outs of the trade:

Essendon
IN: Pick 5, pick 24, Craig Bird
OUT: Jake Carlisle, pick 23, pick 44

St Kilda
IN: Jake Carlisle, pick 14
OUT: Pick 5, pick 24

Sydney
IN: Pick 23, pick 44 (1177 bidding points)
OUT: Craig Bird, pick 14 (1161 bidding points)

While the deal sees Carlisle depart the Bombers, they get an excellent return for him, grabbing pick 5 as a virtual straight swap while also receiving Bird from the Swans for a third round pick and slight downgrade in their second round selection.

It leaves the Bombers with picks 4, 5, 24 and 25 as their first four selections heading into this year’s draft, a very strong position to be in.

“We’re extremely pleased with the outcome of this deal, to be able to pair pick 5, which will become a terrific young talent with our current pick 4 is fantastic for our football club,” said Essendon’s list manager Adrian Dodoro.

“We now have four selections inside the top 25 which will allows us to add some exciting talent to our list.”

St Kilda do well out of the deal also, landing their man in Jake Carlisle while still being able to maintain a first round selection in the upcoming draft, at pick 14.

“At his best Jake is an elite key defender and we are thrilled to have him join the Saints,” said Saints COO Ameet Bains.

“We were adamant right from the start that we wanted to secure Jake but it had to be the right deal for the club, something agreed with Jake and his management up front. We feel that we have achieved that by retaining a first round pick at the National Draft.”

It’s really only a middling deal for the Swans while the offer that was floated yesterday would have been much more beneficial for them.

They do make a net gain in terms of bidding points, but it’s only 16 points in total and they lose Bird in the process.
