Melbourne move up the draft order in picks trade with Gold Coast

Melbourne have struck a deal with the Gold Coast Suns that sees them gain picks 3, 10 and 43 in this year’s draft, while giving up pick 6, pick 29, and their 2016 first-round draft pick.

Essentially the deal gives Melbourne two first-round selections in this year’s draft, but they give up their first-round selection in next year’s draft in exchange.

They also lose the pick 29 they gained from Port Adelaide in Monday’s four-club trade, leaving them without a second round selection in this draft, but they get pick 43 back from the Suns.

Part of the reasoning behind Melbourne’s trade may be to gain a selection in the draft before those of Essendon, who now hold picks 4 and 5 after today’s Jake Carlisle trade.

They are likely looking to select a player at pick 3 who they don’t believe would have been available at pick 6.

That player could be midfielder Darcy Parish or possibly key forward Charlie Curnow, or it could be someone else entirely. The draft, which well be held on November 24, is still more than a month away.

“It [the trade] significantly strengthens our drafting position for 2015 and access to elite top end talent in this year’s National Draft,” said Melbourne’s football manager Josh Mahoney.

“Importantly, the deal signed this morning was the original deal proposed with Gold Coast involving Jeremy Howe. We have just replaced the Howe to Gold Coast component with pick No.29 – the pick we received from Collingwood in the Howe trade.

“By trading our future first round selection, we have opted to bring in two players now and will back in our program to develop these players into elite AFL footballers.”

For Gold Coast the deal allows them to invest further in future draft picks, and spread their bounty of picks from this year across multiple drafts.

They will still take picks 6 and 16 to this year’s draft inside the first round, and hold picks 29, 31 and 35 in the second round also, though they are expected to trade one of those for Matt Rosa.

They can now boast an extra first round pick and two extra second round picks in next year’s draft.

“The introduction of future picks trading has come at the perfect time for our football club,” said Gold Coast’s football manager Marcus Ashcroft.

“In a year where we were set to hold a large number of early draft picks, this initiative has meant we have been able to spread the picks over two drafts, allowing us to utilise two first round selections at the 2015 and 2016 drafts.

“Despite spreading our selection over two draft pools, we still maintain a strong hand at this year’s draft, holding two first & second round selections in 2015.”
