Race result:

An impressive late sprint resulted in victory for Politeness at Flemington in the Myer Classic, taking the win from Fenway in second and Azkadellia third.

The mare got into a good position early and found itself in a sprint with Fenway to take the lead, before surviving a late challenge from Azkadellia.

Race preview:

The best mares in the land will compete over the mile in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m). Join The Roar before the race start time of 4:35pm (AEDT) for commentary and late mail.

Gun fillies rarely win this race. Stay With Me will attempt the feat as the favourite and the daughter of Miss Finland, who I underestimated in the Guineas, is $4.20 in the market. If her win in the Guineas was anything to go by she will run a good race.

Jameka was second that day, and won last week’s Vase at Moonee Valley. So the form has been backed up.

Stay With Me has an outstanding turn of foot, and the long Flemington straight will give her a chance. The wide gate might be a burden though.

Royal Descent is the best of the older mares – she just continues to perform. It’s been over a year since she took on just mares and she has been ultra-consistent in that time, despite winning just once. Second in the market, at $6, she is great value.

La Passe has won the Tristarc at big odds, after winning the Blazer Stakes at big odds. She’s big odds again and is terribly underrated at $17.

May’s Dream was favourite in this race last year, she is tracking well but she has drifted to $13 in the market, which is a really great price. Fenway is a Group 1 winner jumping at ridiculous odds.

Politeness is one of my favourite mares and she is unbeaten so far this preparation. However she is making the step up to the mile off two 1200-metre runs. Take her on trust.

Azkadellia is out of restricted grade but could be anything. She was one of the best non-winners out of Moonee Valley last weekend, and this race is too soon for me.

Solicit always threatens and is good fresh. Her Tristarc form might hold some sway, and $26 is a big price. Jesse Belle I’ll take on.

Abidewithme has had some good runs in Group 1 handicaps, and must be considered at double-figure odds.

Amicus is a Group 1 winner and has already won twice this preparation. Her last two runs have been disappointing, but the $34 quote is hard to ignore.

Happy to take on Miss Rose De Lago.

You could make a case for so many of these runners so good luck to those who can find a winner.
