Group 1 racing makes its return in 2016 with the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m), and with a quality field the 2016 edition promises to be a beauty. Join The Roar before the race start time of 4:30pm (AEDT) for tips and late mail.
There is so much talent in this race with previous Group 1 winners a plenty that it is going to be tough to pick a winner. Just two runners have been up for a while (Lucky Hussler and Messene) with the majority of the field either coming into this race fresh or off one start.
The winner will join an illustrious list of previous victors which includes Black Caviar, Typhoon Tracy, Elvstroem, Saintly and Jeune.
An interesting stat is that the last six favourites have won this and all started sub $3. But this is the biggest field the Orr has attracted since it was granted Group 1 status which makes things a little trickier.
If you are perhaps going off the barrier then Messene out of barrier five is the most successful with four wins while Suavito’s barrier one has produced three winners.
I’m going to throw a wild pick into the mix and go with Suavito here. The five-year-old mare resumes here she won the Futurity Stakes this track/trip first up last prep beating Dissident (who won this race last year). Prior to that she beat mares fresh.
Suavito has all the boxes ticked to win this one and at $17 could be a good way to kick off the year.
Boban showed glimpses of his best last prep and has a great record at this track picking up two wins from his three starts including the Memsie. He has trialled well and has all the class to be a threat here, $9 looks a promising quote.
Turn Me Loose trialled well at home and has a tremendous record and is a proven weight for age horse. Quote a bit short for mine but could trouble them based on previous form.
Trust in a Gust has to be included here, has a tremendous record at this distance. Looked a bit fresh last start, but performs well at this track and is a proven Group 1 winner, a chance at $17.
Others to include are perhaps Rising Romance who was 1.5 lengths off winning the Memsie first up last preparation. At $31, a sneaky hope.
Bow Creek from the John O’Shea yard another one to include as well. Rebel Dane, Lucky Hussler and Entirely Platinum among the rest.
