Sam Stosur will be hoping for good fortune and a strong start to her French Open campaign ahead of her first round match-up against Misaki Doi. Join The Roar for live scores of the match from around 11pm (AEST).

The bad news for Stosur is that she’ll be without her ultimate weapon – the ever-powerful backhand. She has decided to shelve it due to a wrist injury that she has been carrying since a tournament in Strasbourg.

Having won the French Open back in 2010, Stosur would have been hoping to reclaim some of that form and again climb the rankings. She’ll test her wrist prior to the match and may end up just going with a one-handed slice backhand over her preferred two-handed weapon.

Misaki Doi who is currently ranked 38th in the world and just missed out an Open seed will look to exploit Stosur’s injury. While Doi has rather surprisingly never made it past the second round in Paris, the Australian has always preferred the French grand slam over the other three.

Stosur knows she can’t take anything for granted in the opening round of grand slams having been knocked out early in tournaments previously and will be ready for the battle that Doi will bring to the court tonight.

This will be the third meeting between these two players who oddly enough have played both times in Osaka, Japan. The left handed Doi has managed to take only one set from Stosur during those two matches.

Prediction
Dependent upon the severity of the injury you’d expect Stosur to win this one – however I’m going with the upset. Left-handers are always intriguing to watch and with the injury cloud hovering above Stosurs head, Doi should exploit this.

Doi in 3 sets (6-3, 4-6, 6-2)
