Novak Djokovic became only the third male in tennis history to hold all four Slam singles titles at the same time by downing Andy Murray 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 in the French Open final at Roland Garros overnight.

Donald Budge in 1938, and Rod Laver in 1962 and 1969 are the only Grand Slammers in the calendar year, with Djokovic now the 2015 Wimbledon and US Open champion, and the 2016 Australian and French title holder,

Others to complete career Slams:

Roy Emerson (12 Slams) – with six Australian, two French, two Wimbldons, and two US.

Fred Perry (8) with one Australian, one French, three Wimbledons, and three US.

Roger Federer (17) with four Australian, one French, seven Wimbledons, and five US.

Andre Agassi (8) with four Australian, one French, one Wimbledon, and two US.

Rafael Nadal (14) with one Australian, nine French, two Wimbledons, and two US.

And Djokovic (12) with six Australian, one French, three Wimbledons, and two US.

There have been many tennis legends and high quality players who haven’t won all four Slams during their illustrious careers:

Never won the French – Peter Sampras (14 Slams), Jimmy Connors (8), John Newcombe (7), and Boris Becker (6).

Never won Wimbledon – Ken Rosewall (8), Ivan Lendl (8), and Mats Wilander (7).

Never won the Australian – Henri Cochet (6),

Never won the Australian or French – Bill Tilden (10), and John McEnroe (8).

Never won the Australian or US – Bjorn Borg (11).

Strangely neither Djokovic nor Murray have great strike rates in Slam finals.

Last night was Djokovic’s 20th final with 13 victories, while Murray has been doing it tougher with 10 Slam final for only two wins.

It was Djokovic and Murray’s 36th head-to-head with the Serb enjoying a 25-11 success rate.

Next up Wimbledon starting June 27 as Djokovic, the defending champion, will set out to make a dent in Budge’s all-time record of winning six Slams in succession.

The American won the 1937 Wimbledon and US and then his Grand Slam of all four in the calendar year of 1938.

That’s a big ask for Djokovic, but the way he’s playing, anything is possible.

Don’t be surprised if Djokovic overtakes Federer’s record 17 Slams, as it’s doubtful if Switzerland’s favourite son will ever win another Slam.
