Adelaide Crows
Rory Sloane – 24 votes
Sloane had an excellent season and was considered one of the leading contenders for the medal before his suspension in Round 22. Of the eligible Crows players, Rory Laird was the best with 11.
Brisbane Lions
Tom Rockliff – 9 votes
Underlining the Lions’ poor season, just four of their players received votes at the count. Club captain Tom Rockliff was the best of them, with nine. The Lions as a club recorded just 20 votes – 15 less than Patrick Dangerfield individually.
Carlton Blues
Patrick Cripps – 18 votes
No surprises here. Cripps closed out his season in ripping form and shot up the leaderboard in the second half of the count. He could very well win one of these some day.
Collingwood Magpies
Adam Treloar – 21 votes
A great first season at the Magpies for Adam Treloar saw him the lead the club’s Brownlow votes, four ahead of his skipper Scott Pendlebury with 17.
Essendon Bombers
Zach Merrett – 19 votes
Merrett’s coming of age season saw him finish with a very impressive total of 19 votes on the same day that he signed a contract extension with the Bombers. A pretty good day all things considered.
Fremantle Dockers
Lachie Neale – 20 votes
The Dockers’ clear best player for the season, Neale celebrated a record-breaking year by also cracking into the 20-vote club for the first time.
Geelong Cats
Patrick Dangerfield – 35 votes
But then, you knew that already, didn’t you?
Gold Coast Suns
Aaron Hall and Tom J Lynch – 11 votes each
Hall had a perfect start to the season polling three votes, three votes, three votes in the first three games of the year, but picked up just two more for the rest of the year. Lynch got plenty of votes early as well but these petered out as the Suns’ run of wins ended.
GWS Giants
Stephen Coniglio – 17 votes
It was a breakout year for the Western Australian who showed an ability to win tons of the ball and also shut down the opposition’s best player.
Hawthorn Hawks
Sam Mitchell – 16 votes
Added more to his legacy, now equal with Gary Ablett junior for the second most Brownlow votes by any player ever, with a total of 220 from his career.
North Melbourne Kangaroos
Daniel Wells – 12 votes
Expected to depart the Roos as a free agent, Wells is going to be a big loss for North Melbourne in 2017 if the Brownlow count is anything to go by.
Melbourne Demons
Max Gawn – 16 votes
Named All-Australian for the first time and unlucky to miss out on Melbourne’s best-and-fairest, the umpires disagreed rating big Maxy the best Demon of 2016.
Port Adelaide Power
Robbie Gray – 19 votes
Another strong season for Gray saw him finish with his biggest Brownlow vote tally yet, after recording total of 14 and 13 votes in the last two counts.
Richmond Tigers
Dustin Martin – 25 votes
Martin was the competition’s busiest vote-getter in the second half of the year, and showed that if he can play a full season of A-grade form, he could win one of these some day.
St Kilda Saints
Nick Riewoldt – 19 votes
Riewoldt turns 34 in a couple of weeks and has played 16 seasons of AFL footy – tonight, he recorded his most votes in a single year ever. What a legend.
Sydney Swans
Luke Parker – 26 votes
Parker was the best of a talented Sydney quartet, finishing second in the overall count. His teammates Dan Hannebery (21), Lance Franklin (17) and Josh P Kennedy (14) saw plenty of votes.
West Coast Eagles
Andrew Gaff – 21 votes
Gaff backed up his excellent 2015 season with another strong effort this time around, narrowly beating out Josh J Kennedy and Matt Priddis – both on 17 – for the most Eagles votes.
Western Bulldogs
Marcus Bontempelli – 20 votes
No surprises here! If there was a player in the league I’d bet my house on winning a Brownlow someday, it’s the Bulldogs’ budding superstar Bonti.
