After the boys run in the Derby, we have the 2012 Crown Oaks as the most important staying race for fillies.

The Oaks is run at 3:40pm today during the Melbourne Cup Carnival from Flemington and we’ll be live blogging the race and results from trackside on Ladies Day.

The money will show there’s two main hopes today: Fast finisher in the 1000 Guineas and subsequent Wakeful Stakes (2000m) winner Zydeco, and nemesis Dear Demi, who was second in the 1000 Guineas and should have been closer in the Wakeful.

Zydeco is the favourite for the race and looks to be the one to beat. Textbook preparation, by a staying stallion Zabeel, which should mean the 2500m is no problem and punters like her. She does meet Dear Demi 2.5kgs worse off.

Dear Demi has been unlucky and carrying big weights, so will enjoy the return to set weights. Against is that she has been racing a long time, and her form just needs to last another race – but is awkwardly drawn in barrier 12.

Of the other runners, Summerbliss was second in the Ethereal and only has two starts to her name – she could show big improvement.

La Zuma has had the Oaks as her focus from day one – she was held up the Wakeful and didn’t have much room to move and didn’t show her best.

Alzora won the Ethereal Stakes Caulfield on October 20 over 2000m and may enjoy the extended trip to 2500m.

Another ‘Z’ name to watch is Zuccotto – Hugh Bowman discussed a gear change after her start in the Wakeful and a lugging bit has gone on the horse. Trainer Guy Walter has a way with the fairer sex of horse, but she is a real roughie.

It will be an exciting race, and we’ll bring you all the updates from Flemington.
