Known as the glamour club of the A-League, Sydney FC has lured the likes of Dwight Yorke, Benito Carbone and Juninho to the harbour city. Having been crowned the inaugural A-League champions in 2005/06, the club went on to claim their first premiership, and second championship, in a highly successful 2009/10 season. Under constant pressure to match the increasing expectations of the Australian public, Sydney finished last season in a dismal ninth position. Despite this failure, the club has remained loyal to manager Vitezslav Lavicka in the hope that he can return them to the top of the A-League.

Time for a Sydney FC clean out
by John Davidson - February 7th 2012 @ 3:41am
With Viteslav Lavicka gone at the end of the season, it’s time for Sydney FC to ready itself for a player clean out. While things have improved off the field for the Sky Blues, it hasn’t gone to plan on the field this season. I wrote the other day that Lavicka leaving was the right [...]

Victory need to lock in or lock out Magilton
by philipcoates - February 4th 2012 @ 8:00am
Jim Magilton may be only three weeks into his short-term appointment as coach of Melbourne Victory, but it’s time for both the Victory and Jim to make a call on his Australian coaching future. The reason I say this is because Melbourne Victory cannot afford to wait until the end of the season to start [...]
Lavicka gone: Sydney FC make right call
by John Davidson - February 3rd 2012 @ 11:18am
Sydney FC’s longest-standing coach Viteslav Lavicka will leave the club at the end of the current A-League season to return home, a positive move for the Sky Blues. In a busy news on the Australian football coaching front, following John van’t Schip’s decision to leave the Melbourne Heart, Sydney FC will also have a new [...]

A-League needs to entertain more consistently
by Mike Tuckerman - January 27th 2012 @ 4:46am
While much of the focus was on former Sydney FC defender Mark Milligan, there was some symmetry to the fact it was ex-Victory defender Sebastian Ryall who proved the man of the hour in the “Big Blue” yesterday. Ryall’s goal was symptomatic of the match: unexpected and scrappy, but thoroughly entertaining. Not for the first [...]

A-League’s tough expansion lessons can boost game
by Beau Busch - February 8th 2012 @ 3:17am
Talk of A-League growth to Tasmania has raised the issue of expansion for the sport into new markets, with opinions divided on the wisdom of doing so. With the death of the North Queensland Fury and the struggles of Gold Coast United off the pitch, the difficulties in expanding the competition have been clearly demonstrated. [...]
The problem with Melbourne Victory’s ‘hole’ season
by anthcol - February 7th 2012 @ 7:41am
Whether it be through tactical ineptitude or players not following instructions, Melbourne Victory play their football with not enough emphasis on the most dangerous position on the park. The central attacking midfield position has been criminally ignored all season by the A League’s most disappointing team. Carlos Hernandez and before him Fred played this role [...]

Magilton struggling to make a mark
by Tony Tannous - February 7th 2012 @ 3:00am
Jim Magilton, in his post-match press conference for Saturday’s scoreless Melbourne Derby, defiantly argued he’d found a couple of positives he can build on, including a first clean sheet in 13 games and seeing out the last 15 minutes with a man down. But on the evidence of his work so far for the Melbourne [...]
