Tiger Woods broke clear of Aaron Baddeley over the final six holes to win the $US7 million ($A8.46 million) BMW Championship by two strokes in Chicago.

Australian Baddeley was one shot clear of Woods with seven holes left, but Woods seized control with four birdies in a brilliant five-hole stretch in ideal scoring conditions.

In perfect control of his swing, and his putter running hot, he matched the course record of 63 to finish at 22-under-par 262 for his fourth victory at Cog Hill.

Woods also went to the top of the points list going into this week’s Tour Championship, the final event in the new US PGA Tour play-off series.

Runner-up Baddeley, who started the day tied for the lead with American Steve Stricker, had every reason to hold his head high after a 66, even if it wasn’t good enough.

“Obviously I’m disappointed I didn’t win but I played nicely,” Baddeley said.

“I didn’t hand it to him. He had to shoot 8-under to win.”

Another Australian, Adam Scott, also had a good result, shooting 65 for fourth place, although he was never in the hunt, finishing eight shots back.

Baddeley kept pace with Woods in a scintillating front nine, as the three leaders caught fire with their putters, all making a hat-trick of birdies from the seventh hole.

It was a three-way tie at the turn, and Baddeley poked his nose in front with a birdie at the par-five 11th, but that was before Woods took command.

He ran in a 15-metre monster birdie at the par-three 12th to tie Baddeley, and went ahead with another birdie at the next, staying clear the rest of the way.

Woods posted his sixth victory of the year, the 60th for his career on the US Tour, and moved closer to the $US10 million ($A12.08 million) bonus awarded to the points leader after the Tour Championship, with Stricker and Phil Mickelson in the next two spots.
