Melbourne coach Dean Bailey says the resignation of club CEO Steve Harris caught him by surprise.

Harris announced last night he would leave the AFL club next month following a poor financial result last year.

Bailey said he had spoken to Harris and was disappointed by the decision.

“Obviously it’s disappointing when those sorts of things happen,” Bailey said today.

“I didn’t see it when I first walked in the door and I was a little bit surprised at it happening.”

Harris was a key figure in the appointment of Bailey last year following the departure of Neale Daniher.

“Hopefully with Steve’s three and a half years people can look at the things that he’s brought to the club, the benefits he’s brought and really focus on the things that he’s done well,” said the new coach.

Bailey said he had no inclination Harris would quit at the time of his appointment.

“When I got appointed I didn’t think that was going to happen, no,” Bailey said.

Bailey was in Canberra today along with the Demons squad for a week of training at the Australian Institute of Sport.

He met today with Wests Tigers’ NRL coach Tim Sheens and Australian netball coach Norma Plummer.

“I think when you share ideas it just makes you reflect on what you’re doing,” Bailey said.

“I think we all benefit once we get a bit of a roundtable discussion going.”
