Australians Geoff Ogilvy and Robert Allenby were only one stroke from the clubhouse lead during the second round at the US Open here today.

The Victorian duo avoided the potential disaster lurking at every corner of Torrey Pines to match each other at even-par 142, while Americans Davis Love and D.J. Trahan led at one-under with half of the field back in the clubhouse.

“It was not as good as yesterday (but) it was okay,” said 2006 champion Ogilvy, who shot a two-over 73.

“I had a pretty decent score, because I played pretty scrappy. I was two-over after four (holes), so two-over for the day is pretty good.

“It should have been easier today (playing in the morning) but it didn’t seem easy to me, maybe because I wasn’t playing quite as well.”

It wasn’t all scrappy from Ogilvy, who hit a series of outstanding approach shots in the middle part of his round, without converting any of five successive birdie chances.

“I could have had a nice run and I didn’t birdie any of them, but I probably snuck a few sneaky putts yesterday, so it all works out.”

Allenby, meanwhile, made a rare appearance on a major leaderboard, thanks to a one-over 72.

“I’m just happy with the way I’m playing,” said the Victorian, who has never finished better than seventh in 48 major starts.

“I just want to keep it going through the weekend. My main goal is just to give myself a chance come Sunday.

“I’ve been working quite hard on my swing and it’s nice to get some results. Sometimes you work so hard and you don’t get the results.”

Allenby, who on Thursday said the greens were the worst he had ever putted on, said they were considerably better on Friday morning.

“They definitely watered them overnight and they showed a lot more moisture. They were definitely a lot fairer and a lot more receptive to good putts. The didn’t bounce like they did yesterday.”

While Love and Trahan shared the clubhouse lead, Ogilvy and Allenby were joined one shot back by South African Ernie Els and Englishman Luke Donald.

Two other Australians played early, with Aaron Baddeley carding 73 for five-over 147, and Jarrod Lyle two strokes further back after a 74.
