Australia dropped three catches as the West Indies rode their luck to 1-99 at tea chasing a world record 475 for victory on day four of the third Test at Kensington Oval.

Xavier Marshall had two lives during an eventful session to remain unbeaten on 42, with Ramnaresh Sarwan 19 not out at the break.

Chris Gayle was dropped by Beau Casson on eight, and then was lucky to survive a run out chance on 20.

But the skipper failed to take advantage as he departed soon after for 22, shovelling a dolly of a catch to Brett Lee at mid-on off Stuart Clark (1-29) to end a streaky 64-run opening stand.

Simon Katich, after a superb 157 with the bat in Australia’s second innings of 5(dec)-439, again had a nightmare in the field.

Shifted from first slip to third after spilling two catches in the first innings, Katich proceeded to drop a straight forward chance from Marshall on one off Lee.

Wicketkeeper Brad Haddin then gave the young opener a second life on 22 when he failed to grasp a Marshall edge off Clark.

But unlike his lacklustre skipper, Marshall did his best to capitalise on Australia’s mistakes, stroking a couple of classic cover drives to move within sight of his second Test half century.

Ricky Ponting gave his side five sessions to bowl out the Windies – who are expected to bat one short with opener Sewnarine Chattergoon struggling with a badly sprained ankle – after declaring at lunch on 5-439.

Michael Clarke was 48 not out and Brad Haddin 45 when the declaration came after the pair had added 79 runs for the sixth wicket.

Sulieman Benn was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2-47 today to claim innings figures of 3-154 from 47 overs.

Australia lead 1-0 in the three-Test series.
