Geoff Ogilvy proved spot on with his final round prediction but back-to-back bogeys at the turn wrecked his chances of a second US Open title.

Ogilvy, the 2006 champion, was only one stroke from the lead when he stood on the tee at the par-five ninth at Torrey Pines today, birdie very much in his mind.

But the Australian made a complete mess of the hole, running up a bogey, and when he dropped another shot at the par-four 10th he suddenly needed a near miracle to win.

Had he played the final 10 holes in one-under-par he would have been in Monday’s 18-hole play-off with Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate.

It wasn’t to be.

When Ogilvy’s birdie putt at No.15 stopped on the lip it was all but over, and he added anti-climactic bogeys at the 15th and 16th holes to slide into a tie for ninth, five strokes behind Woods and Mediate, who finished regulation tied at one-under 283.

“I thought one-under was going to be in a play-off at worst,” said Ogilvy.

“When you’re even par on the ninth tee with a downwind par-five, obviously it was a chance if I played a great last 10 holes.

“I just made bad bogeys on nine and 10 and that put me too far back.

“You just can’t attack or it all comes unraveled, so I just had to make the putts and I didn’t make them in the end.

“I went out there today needing to hit the ball better and for the most part I did. Apart from hitting it in two hazards, it was pretty decent.”

Ogilvy finished best Australian, while Rod Pampling (70) closed strongly to tie for 14th, six strokes off the pace.

Robert Allenby, who was also in contention early in the final round, faded with a 75 to finish seven back, with Adam Scott (70) eight shots behind and Aaron Baddeley (74) nine adrift.

Halfway leader Stuart Appleby (75) plunged all the way down to equal 36th at nine-over 293.
