Michael Petkovic is planning to stamp himself as Australia’s second-choice goalkeeper in his bid to eventually succeed Mark Schwarzer between the sticks.

The custodian, who plays for Turkish side Sivasspor, is tipped to win selection ahead of Ante Covic in Sunday’s World Cup qualifying dead rubber against China in Sydney.

He has been on the bench for most of the Socceroos’ June qualifiers but, with Schwarzer suspended, is hopeful of earning his seventh cap on Sunday.

While he knows deposing Schwarzer – arguably Australia’s best player throughout the qualification campaign so far – is unlikely, he believes a good performance against China will enhance his future prospects.

“To get the opportunity to play again and for the coaching staff to see me at this level, it will help my chances of hopefully taking the number one spot,” said Petkovic, who at 31 is four years younger than Schwarzer.

“But as you know Schwarzer has been there for so many years and he’s done a great job for the country.

“Everyone else has to wait their time.

“… Being on the bench is a good feeling as well but playing would be an even better feeling, so I’m looking forward to it if the coach gives me the nod.”

Petkovic, who is also two years younger than Covic, said he was now feeling the best he had physically for some time.

“I’ve had a few injuries in the last couple of years that’s set me back so it’s good to be back in the squad,” Petkovic said.

“I haven’t felt this good for a while.”

He was also unfazed at the prospect of barking orders to his defenders in front of more than 70,000 people at ANZ Stadium if selected.

“It’s important to speak to your defenders and hopefully my voice can be heard to organise the defence on Sunday,” he said.
