Few alarms for Mauresmo on Court Two

Former champion Amelie Mauresmo survived an evening test on Wimbledon’s notorious Court Two today when she beat American Ashley Harkleroad 6-4 6-3.

The 29th-seeded Frenchwoman, winner here in 2006, suffered a few nerves when trying to close out the first set at 5-2 but made no mistake two games later when she served to love.

Mauresmo, playing with her left thigh strapped, showed no sign of the injury that forced her to withdraw from last week’s Eastbourne tournament and she broke early in the second set.

Harkleroad, ranked 74th in the world, struggled to deal with Mauresmo’s skidding slices and was given no opportunities to extend the match to a third set. Mauresmo wrapped up the first round victory in 69 minutes.

Wimbledon’s Court Two, which will be replaced by a new arena next year, has claimed many former champions over the years such as John McEnroe and Serena Williams.

Mauresmo, who has endured a difficult season struggling for form and fitness, could face sixth seed Williams in the third round if she gets past Spain’s Virginia Ruano Pasqual in Wednesday’s second round.
