Hit Zimbabwe for six, Nelson urges ICC

The International Cricket Council (ICC) should hit Zimbabwe for six and dump it from international competition, federal Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson says.

Cricket Australia (CA) is set to call for Zimbabwe to have its full membership withdrawn at the ICC conference in Dubai, due to the African nation’s poor standards.

But it remains to be seen whether Australia will call for Zimbabwe’s suspension because of its links to the regime of Robert Mugabe.

However, the vote is likely to be determined by India, which supports Zimbabwe.

Dr Nelson today said while sport and politics don’t mix, the troubled African nation should be dumped from the ICC while Mugabe remains in power.

“Generally sport and politics are a bad combination, but I will be disappointed if Zimbabwe is not removed,” he said.

“All of us need to realise that innocent Zimbabweans have been beaten, have been tortured and killed under an illegitimate regime.

“President Mugabe has lost all legitimacy in the eyes of Australia.”

“It would be a welcome decision if they did choose to do it – hit them for six.”
