The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) plans to run a series of anti-ambush advertisements asking companies not to link themselves to the Beijing Games without proper authorisation.

The newspaper ads will run from July 31 and will asks companies to respect the Olympic sponsorship program by not incorrectly suggesting that they have any association or connection with the AOC, Australian Olympic team or International Olympic Committee.

“It is of great importance to Australia’s Olympic campaign, that activities undertaken by non-sponsoring companies are conducted in good faith and with proper regard to the IOC’s, AOC’s sponsorship and licensing arrangements,” the AOC said in a statement.

“Past experience has demonstrated that only a tiny fraction of advertising, by a small minority of advertisers, breaches these arrangements. Nevertheless, the AOC wishes to achieve the best possible outcome.”

With over 400 Australian athletes attending the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Australia is in a strong position to maintain its place in the top five medal tally.

The AOC said the support of its sponsors was vital to this effort.

“Without that commitment, the Australian Olympic team would be unable to maintain its history of successful participation in the Games,” it said.

The ads will ask readers to think about the support and commitment of Olympic sponsors.

“However, some companies use Olympic emblems or imagery without authorisation, thus duping Olympic fans into believing that they have an official association with the Olympic Games,” they say.

“This is unfair to the athletes, the official Olympic sponsors and the Olympic Movement, as a whole – remember, it is they who make the Olympic dream possible.

“Show your respect for the official Olympic sponsors and support only those who make the true effort.
