Millionaire punt for first-timer on Wests Tigers

Who wants to be a millionaire? A first-time punter from across the Tasman stands to be just that should Wests Tigers take out the NRL premiership this season following a stunning outlay of $20,000 on Tim Sheens’ boys to repeat their 2005 heroics.

The bet was put on with Centrebet this afternoon, the betting agency immediately slashing the $51 on offer down to $41.

“He’s backed the Tigers to win a million dollars,” spokesman Neil Evans said of the Auckland-based punter.

“He’s rung a few times, when he first rang he wanted $50,000 on them to win $2.5 million.

“When he came back and put the money in he settled with $20,000.

“Obviously he’s having monumental flashbacks to 2005.”

The Tigers haven’t even made the finals since their first triumph as a joint venture club, and last week’s 36-12 win over South Sydney broke a four-match losing streak.

They currently sit in tenth position on 20 competition points, just one behind eighth-placed Penrith — who they play tomorrow night — with seven rounds remaining.
