Queensland Roar’s proposed clash with the LA Galaxy in December could be announced as early as this week after David Beckham’s club was confirmed to play an exhibition in Auckland today.

Beckham’s Galaxy will face an Oceania All Stars invitational team on December 6, with reports claiming the US Major League Soccer club would then go on to meet the Roar at Suncorp Stadium on December 11.

A 52,000-sellout would be expected in Brisbane for the marquee clash, with Beckham’s side last year attracting more than 80,000 to Sydney’s Olympic Stadium to watch the Galaxy go down 5-3 to Sydney FC.

The Auckland Regional Council (ARC) and Mt Smart Stadium have finalised negotiations with LA Galaxy for the December 6 match-up, with a crowd of up to 40,000 expected.

“Hosting David Beckham and the LA Galaxy for a match at the ARC’s Mt Smart Stadium will bring a global sporting superstar of a popular sport to the people of the Auckland region,” said ARC chairman Michael Lee.

Galaxy assistant general manager Tom Payne said the team enjoyed their experience in New Zealand last year, where they played the Wellington Phoenix, and were looking forward to again providing an exciting match for fans.

A training session drew a crowd of more than 15,000 school children in Wellington before that game last year, with 31,853 watching the Galaxy defeat the Wellington Phoenix 4-1.
