Sydney FC coach John Kosmina has called for a review into the brandishing of yellow cards in the A-League following Mitchell Prentice’s rapid-fire send off in Newcastle.

The Sydney midfielder picked up two yellows in five minutes – and was only on the field for 17 minutes having come on as a second half substitute – when he was sent for an early shower in Saturday night’s 0-0 draw with the Jets.

Kosmina said there was no week to week consistency from the referees and also some confusion as to what exactly constitutes a bookable offence.

“I think sometimes maybe the referees have to look at the intention side of things,” Kosmina said.

“I’ve just seen the list and everyone got booked for unsporting behaviour. Does that mean trying to tackle is now unsporting in the game? I don’t know, I’m confused. I don’t really know what the rules are anymore.”

Kosmina also felt the Jets players milked both cards and were perhaps guilty of urging referee Peter O’Leary to send Prentice off.

“I think Adam Griffiths made a bit more of (the foul) than what really happened and I wonder if it was suggested that Mitch get the second yellow as well by the Newcastle blokes.

“There was a guy who got booked for that two weeks ago for Wellington for the same thing.

“I think we need to have a look at what’s happening out there.”

Jets new signing Daniel Piorkowski left the field midway through the second half with blood pouring from his mouth after copping a stray elbow from Sydney striker John Aloisi.

Aloisi later apologised and both Kosmina and Jets coach Gary van Egmond felt there was no malice in it, but the incident is sure to be scrutinised by the match review committee.

“It looked fairly innocuous to me,” van Egmond said.

“He had a couple of teeth move and the dentist has put them back and he’s got three stitches in his lip so it was a bit of a nasty one, but that’s football.”
