New PCB boss unhappy with coach Lawson

Pakistan’s newly appointed cricket board chairman is quoted on a website saying he is unhappy with the performance of the national team’s Australian coach Geoff Lawson.

“There is a need of improvement in the performance of the Pakistan team and Lawson has so far not succeeded,” PCB chairman Ijaz Butt was quoted as saying in the Urdu language section of the BBC Web site.

Attempts made by the Associated Press to contact Butt were not immediately successful today.

Under Lawson’s coaching, Pakistan lost both home Test and one-day series to South Africa and was defeated 1-0 in the Test series against rival India.

It also failed to qualify for the Asia Cup final at home in July when Sri Lanka successfully defended its title by defeating India in the final.

Pakistan’s only highlights this year were convincing wins over Zimbabwe and Bangladesh – the two weakest opponents in top-tier cricket.

The team also went on to qualify for the final of the inaugural World Twenty20 championship in South Africa before losing to India.

“The previous management (of the PCB) could better tell what they expected from Lawson, but in my opinion he has not shown any notable performances,” Butt was quoted as saying.

Lawson has accompanied the Pakistan team to Canada, where four-nation Twenty20 tournament begins Friday at Toronto. Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Canada the other participating nations.

Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari, who is also PCB patron-in-chief, appointed Buttas chairman Tuesday. The 70-year-old Butt played eight test matches for Pakistan as a wicketkeeper batsman in between 1959-62.

The previous PCB regime – under its chairman Nasim Ashraf – appointed former Australian Test fast bowler Lawson as coach last year.
