Former Indian stumper Kiran More says Brad Haddin struggled for long periods in the first Test – but it was too early to judge the Australian `keeper.

More, who had 49 Tests behind the stumps for India in the 1980s and 90s, said Haddin needed to be given time to prove himself as a ‘keeper of international standard.

“India is the most difficult place to keep wicket,” More told AAP.

“Haddin is struggling, that’s what I saw in the first Test, but he’ll be much better for that game – and he’ll be fine in Mohali, where the bounce is much better than elsewhere.

“Ian Healy was definitely a more natural gloveman than either (Adam) Gilchrist or Haddin, when Healy came to India he did a brilliant job whereas Gilchrist and Haddin have struggled.

“It is a bit early to judge Haddin though, he needs to be given the chance to play 30-40 Test matches and then you have a better chance to judge his qualities.”

More was more positive about current Indian `keeper Mahendra Dhoni, who he said could captain his country in the not too distant future.

“Dhoni is excellent, from very early I saw in him a future captain, his mind is excellent and he is very good at concentrating and thinking while he’s out there, he doesn’t get caught up in other things when he’s in the field,” More said.

“He’s ready to be the captain, but Anil (Kumble) is a good captain too, he came late into the captaincy but he’s done a very good job.

“I kept wicket to Anil and he is a great cricketer … it’s always difficult when you get towards the end and a decision needs to be made, but I think Anil will know the best time to make that decision.”
