India’s Sachin Tendulkar dedicated his match-winning century in the first Test against England to the victims of last month’s Mumbai terror attacks.

Tendulkar’s unbeaten 103, his 41st Test century, helped India achieve the fourth-highest run chase in history to stun England by six wickets at the Chidambaram stadium.

“I don’t think that by India winning and me scoring a 100 would make people who have lost near and dear ones feel better,” said the 35-year-old Mumbai resident.

“It was a terrible loss that will stay with all of us in our hearts. But if we can do anything to help them in whatever way we can, or make them feel better, we will.

“I would like to dedicate my 100 to all those who went through those terrible times. What happened in Mumbai was unfortunate.

“From my point of view, it was an attack on India which should hurt every Indian, not just those who live in Mumbai.

“There were a couple of children in my daughter’s school who lost their parents.”

India surpassed the improbable victory target of 387 on a wearing wicket with 20.3 overs to spare on the fifth and final day to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

The match began just a fortnight after the bloody siege of Mumbai by armed militants which left 172 dead and more than 300 injured.

England, who had abandoned the preceding one-day series in India after the attacks, returned for the Test matches after security checks by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

“I would like to thank England for coming back,” said Tendulkar. “I think it was a terrific gesture on their part.”

Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), announced a donation of 30 million rupees ($A902,000) to the security personnel who died or were injured in the Mumbai attacks.

Two thirds of the money will go to the families of the dead security staff, while the remaining cash will be distributed to those injured, a BCCI release said.
