International players should be invited to the Border Medal

I fleetingly watched the Border Medal the other night while taking care of my home finances. Unfortunately for Channel Nine, my home finances were more interesting.

The Border Medal is definitely the poor man’s Brownlow. Not as many hot women and handsome guys, as well as a convoluted voting system.

What about Tony Jones on Channel Nine News trying to make something of Jessica Bratich’s dress? She is a nice looking girl, but she isn’t a Rebecca Twigley.

And then there was the curious case of Mark Nicholas.

With his big head looking slightly ridiculous in a tuxedo, Nicholas was decidedly uncomfortable talking about Australia’s sexiest cricketer. This was probably because Matthew Hayden was one of the eight nominees.

However, where the Border Medal really does pale in comparison with the Brownlow is the lack of competition. Last night it was teammate vying against teammate and it was farcical to see Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke receiving the medal together.

At the Brownlow, you can root for your players to win the medal.

If you are a Bombers fan, then you definitely don’t want to see some hack from Collingwood take away the medal.

And the Brownlow is also a type of consolation prize for the poor souls who support St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs. Although these teams are rarely successful, they often have an outstanding individual who is rewarded at the Brownlow, such as Robert Harvey or Adam Cooney.

Last night it seemed strange that, despite Australia’s poor performances in the field, we were still celebrating Australian cricket. It also seemed strange that there was no mention of the men who shaped our summer, like Graeme Smith, JP Duminy and Dale Steyn.

To rectify this situation, I think international players should be invited to the Border Medal and rewarded for their efforts. There should be an international Border medal.

With his outstanding performances in every form of the game this summer, JP Duminy would have won the international Border medal last night.

For a player who looks destined to be the next Brian Lara, wouldn’t it be great if the Border Medal was one of the first additions to his trophy cabinet?
